Welcome to the Cavendish Living Lab
A vertically integrated project for sustainable development at the University of Westminster funded by the Quintin Hogg Trust
The Cavendish Living Lab’ is a QHT funded vertically integrated project (VIP) that focuses on co-creating sustainable solutions with the student participants from various disciplines and levels using applied research and learning within an authentic setting. The ‘Living Lab’ approach uses the university campus as the laboratory, and provides a platform for our students to partner with various stakeholders to address real world issues and develop innovative, sustainable solutions.
Five Strands Focusing on Building Sustainable Solutions
Urban food growing
Every day on campus food waste is generated. Can we use this bio-waste to grow food on campus to support a circular economy?
Bioplastic production
Can we use foodwaste generated on campus to make sustainable materials and in doing so reduce waste and develop new products?
Water management
The demand for water on campus is high, particularly during term time. Can we find ways to reduce water consumption on campus or could we use this waste water sustainably?
Fast Fashion
What is student awareness of fast fashion and what solutions can we create that will help students with their consumption?
Health and Wellbeing
Is it possible to influence our sustainable behaviour through increased wellbeing? What solutions, at the campus level, exist to reduce the health system's carbon footprint?
